Joe Torre

Former New York Yankees manager Torre has been an advocate for prostate cancer awareness ever since he was diagnosed in 1999. “What scared me initially, in addition to my cancer was that I didn’t have the answers I needed,” Torre said in a 2000 interview with the John Hopkins Prostate Bulletin. Torre said many people have asked him how he’s dealt with prostate cancer.

As a baseball player for 17 years and then as a manager, Torre said he had to start practicing what he preached. “If you have a bad day or week, and if you or your team are not doing particularly well, you need to find effective ways to deal with it,” Torre said. Torre had a radical prostatectomy, but fortunately, the surgeon was able to spare the nerves that control sexual function. As for changes he’s made since his surgery, Torre says that since he learned about possible effects of nutrition on prostate cancer, he’s found ways of replacing all the cholesterol-laden foods still in our diet and exercises regularly.
