The coronavirus pandemic continues to show that even celebrities aren’t immune to its effects. Recently, Patrick Ewing, currently the head coach of the Georgetown University men’s basketball team, tested positive for COVID-19 and was hospitalized, People reports.

On May 22, Ewing announced his diagnosis via Twitter in a statement from Georgetown University Athletics. “I want to share that I have tested positive for COVID-19,” he wrote. “This virus is serious and should not be taken lightly.”

News accounts announced that Ewing was under care and isolated at a local hospital. “I’ll be fine and we will all get through this,” he added.

The onetime athlete encouraged folks to practice staying safe and protecting themselves. He also thanked health care workers and others on the front lines for all their hard work.

Ewing’s son shared similar sentiments when his dad was released from the hospital.

“My father is now home and getting better,” Patrick Ewing Jr. said via Twitter. “We’ll continue to watch his symptoms and follow the CDC guidelines. I hope everyone continues to stay safe and protect yourselves and your loved ones.”

Many fans expressed their joy at hearing that Ewing, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was doing better. One fan said the news was “outstanding” and that he hoped the “big guy” would return to good health soon. Comedian Michael Rapaport tweeted, “We Love Big Pat!!!”
